Chapter 2

Tessa’s pulse skipped a beat falling behind Katie and Leon. She would never get nervous walking into some politician’s campaign headquarters under normal circumstances. These weren’t normal circumstances, though.

These were the people who killed Matt and they tried to kill her countless times. She steeled herself for the worst. They might open fire the moment she showed her face in there.

They didn’t. The glass door swung shut behind her. Leon and Katie approached a reception desk manned by.... not a Japanese person, but a very white, very normal-looking blonde woman wearing a tailored blue business suit. Her blue eyes gleamed when she smiled. “Good morning. Can I help you?”

Leon flashed his badge. “I’m Detective Leon Griggs of the LAPD. This is Officer Katie Abel of Narcotics. We would like to talk to one of your campaign managers about Mr. Kimura’s fundraising activities.”

“Of course.” She smiled even bigger picking up the phone. “I’ll just call Mitch Simmons. He’s our Supporter Liaison Officer. He liaises with all voter bases. I’m sure he can answer your questions.”

She punched her number pad. Leon raised his eyebrows at Katie, but the party had no choice but to stand there and wait. Tessa scanned the waiting area. Glossy fashion magazines scattered across a coffee table surrounded by couches. A partition separated the seating area from the rest of the office. She couldn’t see beyond it.

This waiting room certainly didn’t contain anything that would raise anyone’s suspicions. Would Kimura’s campaign people ever let anyone from LAPD see what went on behind the scenes? Was the staff shredding the evidence at this very moment? They got plenty of warming when Aaron and Katie arrested Matt’s killer.

The receptionist hung up her phone. She beamed at Leon and Katie again. “He’ll be right out.”

She sat down and concentrated her attention on her computer screen. She paid the group no further attention, but Tessa couldn’t relax. What if they never found any dirt on Kimura? What if they were never able to pin Yakuza membership on him? These organized crime types never left anything to chance. What if the case came to nothing?

This waiting area didn’t give her much hope. She didn’t notice anything incriminating here.

Just then, a white man with brown hair swept around the partition. He stuck out his hand. “Welcome to Kimura for President headquarters. LAPD, right? I’m Mitch Simmons. It’s always a pleasure to meet LA’s finest.”

Leon and Katie shook hands with him while Tessa and Aaron pretended to be invisible. Now that she laid eyes on one of Kimura’s minions, she sent up a silent prayer of gratitude to Leon and Katie that they didn’t let her interview anybody. Matt’s death still stung. She wouldn’t be able to keep her head without grabbing these idiots by the shoulders and screaming at them to tell her everything they knew.

Leon took the lead. “Thank you for seeing us. We were hoping you could clear a few things up for us. Officer Matthew Ferengetti was shot and killed yesterday on his first day on the job.
